Oncology Immunotherapy: Key Concepts and Practical Pearls for Primary and Emergency Clinicians

Oncology immunotherapy has transformed outcomes for many cancer patients, but unlike traditional chemotherapy, it can produce unique immune-related adverse effects that often present first in primary care and emergency settings. This session will provide a practical overview of immunotherapy, outline common toxicities, and highlight key strategies for early recognition, assessment, and initial management.

Presenter: Dr. Gareth Rivalland

Gareth is a Medical Oncologist, specialising in the treatment of melanoma/skin and thoracic cancers, at both Harbour Cancer & Wellness and Auckland City Hospital, where he is the Melanoma team lead. He has been the Principal investigator in numerous Phase 1 to 3 global clinical trials.

Sepsis, and Managing respiratory viral infections, 30th June, Webinar

Sepsis

Using the HealthPathways sepsis screening and action pathway in primary and urgent care, the New Zealand Sepsis Trust, Health Pathways, and the Health Quality and Safety Commission have developed a unified sepsis pathway for use across the spectrum of acute care in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Using worked examples, some submitted by GP colleagues, Paul Huggan explains how the pathway operates to improve patient outcomes.

Managing respiratory viral infections

Tim Cutfield, Infectious diseases physician, will provide a practical update on the management of common respiratory viral infections in primary care, with a focus on influenza and COVID-19. He will cover current guidance on when antiviral treatment is indicated, and how vaccination fits into prevention and risk reduction. The webinar will align with current guidance and support clinicians to make confident, evidence-based treatment decisions in everyday practice.

Injectables for weight loss

FREE WEBINAR: In this practical session, Professor Jeremy Krebs will review key considerations for initiating and managing injectable therapies, including contraindications, dose titration, maintenance dosing, and intolerance management.

Jeremy will cover prevention and management of common gastrointestinal side effects and when treatment should be paused or stopped. He will also explore nutritional counselling, including protein adequacy, micronutrient considerations and preservation of muscle mass, alongside monitoring, defining treatment success or failure, and practical guidance on switching between semaglutide and tirzepatide.

Contraception counselling will also be discussed, including oral contraceptive absorption considerations, fertility implications.
